Brand vs. identity vs. logo — what you’re actually buying

A logo is a souvenir from the brand strategy. Buy in the right order, or you’ll keep paying twice.

Brand vs. identity vs. logo — what you’re actually buying

Founders often ask for a logo when they want a brand. The two are easy to confuse — and the confusion is expensive.

The stack, from top to bottom

Brand is what people believe about you. Identity is the system that makes those beliefs consistent — type, color, tone, motion, layout. Logo is one mark inside that system. You can’t design the bottom without the top.

Why the order matters

If you commission a logo with no brand work, you get a mark. Then you ship a deck, a site, social posts — and each one re-invents your visual story. Soon you’re paying again to “update the logo,” when the real problem is you never built the system.

Start with positioning. Then identity. Then the logo falls out of the system, not on top of it.
